I was pleased to see this when one of my friends at work sent me the link to Ecocho, the eco friendly search engine. Launched on 14th April, Ecocho grows up to 2 trees for every 1000 searches made. They pay for trees by the ads on the site. Ecocho.com is the first search engine that enables users to offset their own carbon emissions, and this is a global initiative. Ecocho.in is for India, but they grow trees only in Australia (as of now).
The search results offered can be chosen either from Yahoo! or from Google as you wish. This is not a gimmick as they give out the details of their working in their FAQs. Trees are grown via official Government-accredited projects. Ecocho is not a non-profit organization, and they aim to contribute 70 per cent of revenue back into carbon offset credits, for the growth of trees. They are a business, and are in for money. But what do we care as long as they are planting 2 trees for every 1000 searches.
I find one bug in the Ecocho site. When i try to Google search from ecocho, it tries to reach the server www.google.com.in instead of www.google.co.in. Hopefully these guys will debug it soon, till then you can Ecocho Yahoo. :)
I find Ecocho better than Blackle, a similar site like Ecocho saving power by black screen. Have a look at Ecocho blog. Download their toolbars and other gadgets straight away, and stop global warming.
This picture below depicts how ecocho works:
And for Bangaloreans interested in growing trees in here, Trees for Free is the one you would wanna have a look at. Trees for free run by Rajanet Yegneswaran, in memory of her late husband Yegneswaran, charges Rs. 100/- for planting one tree. You can have a look at the blog of Trees for free here.
