Online polls are easy and fun, but not bug free. One can easily rig an online poll, and i’ll tell you ‘how to’ soon. Why do i write a post on rigging online polls now?
Avant grade bloggies awards is open for live polling. What’s Avant grade bloggies awards? Read here about this blogging awards started by Poonam. I figured out one can vote for best blogger/post in various categories by online poll from PollDaddy.com. Nice, simple and easy.
How to vote more than once?
Just clear the ‘private data’ of your browser. Some data is saved each time you visit a webpage. Most online poll work by storing a cookie in your system, which indicates that you have already voted. So, when you want to vote again, just delete the cookie and vote again. :)
To delete cookies and other private data, go to Tools menu and click on ‘Clear Private Data’ on Firefox (Check the Cookies list). On IE, similar feature is available.
Isn’t rigging simpler than voting online?
Now, isn’t this the best how to post? :-))
P.S.: It had been really long since i posted anything in ‘technology‘ category. Thanks to Poonam and her set of judges for providing me this opportunity. :P
I think it’s better to let readers vote by comments than this poll, but what do we do about the anon comments with unreal email ids? Judges decision would be final. :P
Thanks for enlightening us on this, but now even those who didn’t know, know! I just hope Poonam reads this so she can think of ways to prevent people from cheating. In comments, sure you can create fake email ids, but how many can you create and how many different ips can you do it from? More effort! It’s far easier to delete cookies and just sit for an hour at your pc and vote again and again and again for your own post!! :(
duh ! bad guy :) how many times have u tried to vote for ur own posts that have been nominated then ? ;)
this crossed my mind when i noticed the re-voting possibility on PollDaddy! pity that such a company doesn’t record IP’s but just leaves cookies… :P
I hope the polling will be fair by all means… comment-voting is a very good alternative, but lots more effort on Poonam’s part…
OMG! I didnt know that. And now many people will know! Hmm not quite right time to post.
You know, a Pirate will always do piracy even when you lock him out. The idea is to be honest to yourself. There will always be two roads to take – Good one and the Bad one. Even if you close the bad road by several security methods, a dishonest person will always circumvent the means to take the Bad road.
In a big picture it doesn’t really matter if you get an award or not, as long as you think you are blogging well and your readers are enjoying it. Just for this, I am not going to be voting for my own post, which increases my risk of getting 0 votes, but I really do not care :)
So if I dont win I can shout polls were rigged!
Somehow, don’t like such stuffs, IMHO :)
hehehehhehe
needless to say, i wasn’t aware
this is some serious food for thought :P
Hi, Sandeep, it was not that I was not aware of this.
Polldaddy does allow blocking by IP too though that ahs otehr set of problem. People from same organisation or wire;ess connections may not vote as most organisations run on same IPs.
I think I will have to pput some other measure or weight inter-ranking of finalist posts based on judges scores to be added to poll results in order to balance out the whole thing. Poll is not for best networking or best loophole cracking blogger, it for the best post in a ctegory. And teh best will win! Thanks!
@Nita
You don’t have to create fake mail ids, you just give some non-existent mail id while commenting.
As far as IP tracking goes, most of us don’t have static IP. So, just disconnect and reconnect your broadband/dial-up connection, chances are you’ll have a new IP.
@megcloud9
Lost count :P
@Su
recording IP is not fool proof either.. Also, it has its own drawbacks (read reply to Nita’s comment)
@Reema
There would be some who knew and just vote for themselves.. So this is an alert..
Reema:
So if I dont win I can shout polls were rigged!
I too want to do this, that’s why this post :))
@Dinesh
Actually, in any picture getting an award is not the most important thing.. None of the nominees started blogging coz of awards/recognition i’m sure.
Since the polling has a flaw, i wanted to showcase it. So, the ones who didn’t win an award can blame something :))
@Manasa
What do you like? ;-) :P
@Swats
Hope you are enjoying this :P
@Poonam
Even if IP is blocked you can reset your net connections (the ones who don’t have static IP).
I feel a set of judges should decide who’s the best. :))
Poll is not for best networking or best loophole cracking blogger
Aww.. i wish such a category existed :P
Yippeeee!!!!
Now I can vote as much as I want! :D
We Knew that coockies can be deleted and we didnt want to add ip address blocking since a lot of people would not be able to vote then…
This voting is just gonna help the judges not decide the outcome!
@ Niks
As if you didn’t know it earlier :P :P
LOL !!
Yeah, one of the coolest ‘Best How To’ posts ;)
So the award thingi is screwed now huh ?!
I was wondering, is it possible to set up a rig for polls that already allow you to vote again? For example: say you and I were choices in a poll, and I wanted to win… could I set something up to keep voting for myself continuously?
Nessa,
That is exactly what i have mentioned about
it does not work for me on a certain poll!
think it is beacuse the poll might recored ip adresses insted of cookies?
is there a way around this?
x
@tom
yeah, you can disconnect your connection and reconnect. This should give you a new IP.. unless you are on static IP, in that case nothing can be done.
Hey Sandeep, even if we connect/disconnect, will it be detected? I notice that when I do that, the IP add changes but only the 2 numbers behind.
That is if you have dynamic IP. If you have static IP, it will not work.
But you can connect/disconnect or switch off/on modem to rig.
Sorry I posted this on the wrong article:
I entered a contest and which says it can only get a vote per person, yet when I vote from my Laptop and want to vote from my desktop it says I have already voted. Several Of my friends have told me that they voted at their school and only 1 of them could vote and on the rest of the computers it said, you have already voted! Even though they hadn’t. Does this mean they are tracking the static ip of the ISP?
Michael Jackson websites encourage his fans to cheat on polls. Only 300 people showed up on the anniversary of his death, so the numbers don’t jog. They should know that cheating wont get them anywhere.
Can a radio station tell if you have done this?
WHY SO MANY INDIANSS
idk
For a poll that records the ip adress. u can download “tor browser” .. and launch it it changes ur ip address and close and launch it again it comes wid a different ip address…
