Kehte hai ke ishq mein neend udh jati hai
Koi humse bhi toh ishq kare.. Kambakth neend bohot aati hai
Sleeping disorder saps the energy out of you. Makes you more stressed. I have been going through this for quite sometime now. And no, no, i’m not in love. In my case, it is not because of this.
I lay in the bed for little more than 8hours on an average but manage to catch only about 4-5hours of sleep. I get into bed by 12-12:30am and i don’t fall asleep for nearly an hour and up to 2-3hours on bad days. If i am lucky, i’ll sleep for few hours before i’m awake by 4-5am. Another hour of battle to catch sleep. Again, by 8am i’ll be awake struggling to catch sleep for the last half an hour or so, but in vain.
This really stresses me out, especially on the days when i have lot of work and when i go out for trips. Even after long hours of sleeplessness i don’t catch sleep easily, like it happened yesterday. I hit the bed by 12:30am on Friday night, and got up (rather got out of bed) by 5:15am on Saturday morning, managing to sleep only for about 2-3hours. Reached home, after a good trip (more about it in the next post), by 4pm. Desperately wanted to catch some sleep, at least for couple of hours. But no. I lay in bed from 4:30 to 5:45 without a wink of sleep, and the i gave up!
Why does this happen with me?! period.
P.S.:
After Bird Race, and Chitra Sante on successive weekends, I went to Valley school on 31st Jan, and Ranganatittu on 7th Feb (yday) . Yet to upload and process images from these two trips. Will try and do this asap.
And, yeah, planning to go to Aero India 2009, the coming week (weekday or weekend, undecided yet). Also, thinking about IndiBlogger’s meet on 21st Feb 28th Feb. Would be good to catch up if any of you are coming for Aero show or blogger’s meet.
Somebody stop me from going out every weekend! I think i should have a girlfriend :))
P.P.S.:
Have accumulated about 50GB of images since i bought my DSLR in late July. Have it all dumped on my desktop hard disk. Since i couldn’t upload anymore images to my computer, i thought to writing these to DVDs. And man, my writer is dead and none noticed. :(
Got writer from my cousin, and started the process. Writing one Sony DVD with 4.5GB of data took nearly 1.5hours!!
I learned that Sony discs suck, and need to get something else. Any inputs on this??
And, ignore the last sentence in P.S.
update:
As Dilip pointed out the problem might be due to device transfer mode in “PIO”, instead of “Ultra DMA”. I had done changes to make the LG drive work about a year back. Read that post.

Hey, hope you do land up for the blogger’s meet! And here’s someone else who just got his first SLR – another Canon. I’m a Nikon fan, so I don’t want anything to do with either of you. :-)
What say we find out who has the biggest… um… lens at the blogger meet?!
Do u have sleeping disorder since childhood? or r u experiencing it now? U can show to a doc or try some other stuff which other people with insomnia do.
“Somebody stop me from going out every weekend! I think i should have a girlfriend :))”
:O U didnt have one??? What about Renuka? :P
Its not abt Sony disc. it depends on RAM. how much GB is ur RAM? I have one GB RAM and it takes around 15 mins to write a dvd with around 4 GB movies. It also helps if u close all other applications for little while.
“ignore the last sentence in P.S.”
Oh so u have one. :D
about backing up your data..
Why don’t you purchase a separate hard disk?
You can get a 500 GB hard disk for something around 4k now…It is worth the moolah considering that DVDs are very unreliable medium of data storage..
Go for moserbaer DVDs instead of sony if you want to stick to DVDs in any case….
Which writer do you use by the way? I have had horrible experiences with Lite-On. I have heard sony is better.
Reema was right about the ram req by the way. 1.5 hours for writing 4 Gig of data is ridiculous!!
Renie,
Will try to make it for the meet.
Reema,
I didn’t have this kinda disorder since childhood.. I think this is something i developed post engg days.
I think i’ve 1GB (or 256MB less than that) of RAM. I did close other applications, after i realized this could hog all the required memory.
No comments on the last sentence of P.S. and P.P.S. :P
Vivek,
I am thinking of an external hard drive. But the problem is i need to back up that as well. Portable hard disks are as unreliable as DVDs.
Yes, I heard Moserbaer DVDs are better. Will try that out too.
I use an LG writer with Nero software.
1.5hours included the time for verification of data (oh ya, this becomes important unlike when you write movies)
i loved ur opening sentence :P
i cn give u tips to combat insomnia..lemme know..and im serious
Looks like, the problem is with windows. While reading some scratched cd/dvd or doing an hard reset the windows switches the device transfer mode from “Ultra DMA” to “PIO” mode. So go to
My computer->properties->Hardware->Device Manger->IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers->IDE channel->properties->Advanced settings and check transfer mode. If it is PIO mode the slow dvd writing speed is due to this. You may need to change windows registry to revert back to DMA mode. Following link has got a nice write up regarding how to do this,

> And, ignore the last sentence in P.S.
I asked you to delete it, not to add a PPS.
You take me for granted don’t you?
Swats,
Was worth the effort eh.. :P
I’m all ears :))
Dilip,
Thanks a lot. That was very helpful. Will update the post with a link to previous fix i had done to get the writer running.
Renuka,
Who
the #%*$are you?!Dilp,
thanks a lot for that link man…damn helpful
The beginning lines cracked me up! De-caffeinating kills my insomnia more often than not. You should try it :)
Have u tried external harddisks? I have one with abt 512gb memory and use it for all pics – have abt 180GB used by now :) Costs lesser than DVD burners and quite convenient. DVDs can be a pain when there are too many of them
Shivya,
I’ve stopped coffee (unless someone pretty asks me out of course :P) for more than a couple of years now. Black tea for the soul, twice a day (to keep me awake at work :D)
usandeep,
I’m planning to get a 250GB or 320GB drive. But i need to take a backup of that too :)
At least of the processed pics, and related RAW ones.
Maga, don’t think so much about women! Messes with your sleep cycles! :D
When I was a kid, I had sleeping disorders, I know exactly how you feel.
There are couple of ways to get some quality sleep.
1. Sleep early.
2. Dont look at the clock every minute. That will make u tensed when you realize that you been trying to sleep for more than an hour now.
3. Try reading (NOT FROM YOUR computer). before going to sleep, that helps in relaxing.
4. Relax, think about good things in your life when you lie down.
5. Try to get some sleep when ur dvd is writing, that is taking awful lot of time !!!
Nikhil,
Thanks for the advice man. I don’t anyway :)
maybe that’s the reason :P
Xylene,
Hey that was good tips!
1. Sleep early I somehow can’t! :(
see at 11pm i switch on my computer and reply to comments :))
2. No looking at clock. The time i mentioned were all approximate guesses.
3. Will try. But good books keep me awake for longer time.
4. Ahh hmm.. will try that too :)
5. I kinda got a workaround for that!
try yoga :D
This is a follow up to the winhlp link that dilip had posted. I have been doing a lot of searching on the net because I was not sure if the registry hack would solve the problem.

Great to see your blog is finally working with my new Blackberry (pearl) browser! Before it’s messed up.
