I wanted to cook a dish all by myself for sometime now, and what better than make one of my favorites, Palak Paneer and Aloo Paratha? :-)

Yes, it does bring tears in your eyes while chopping onions. Here you go:

Palak Paneer:

Palak Paneer

Palak Paneer

Ingredients:

– 3 bunch of Palak (Spinach)

– 1-2 medium sized Onions

– Small slice of Paneer (Cottage Cheese)

– 3-4 Garlic cloves

– Small Ginger piece

– 4-5 tbsp of cooking oil for palak

– 2-3 tbsp of oil for frying paneer

– Milk, curds, cream, and water

– Garam masala powder, Red chilly powder, Coriander powder, Salt, and Sugar

Method of preparation:

Chop palak and clean it. Cook for 5-7minutes in a vessel with water, covering it with a lid. Meanwhile, chop onions, garlic cloves, and a piece of ginger. Grind them together, with some water, to form a consistent paste. Strain off water from palak, and grind it to a fine paste. Take oil in a pan with medium flame, let it warm a little, then put the onion, ginger, and garlic paste and fry it till it gets brownish white (from white). Add half teaspoon garam masala, coriander powder, red chilly powder, and pinch of salt and sugar (according to your taste). Stir it as it gets brownish. Then add palak paste to it along with a little water, and stir as it cooks. Pour 2-3 tbsp of fresh curds, about 30-40ml milk, and 2 tbsp cream. Slice panner into small cubes, soak in water for couple of mitutes, and fry it in another pan to light golden brown color in oil. Then add it to palak. Stir for couple of minutes, and turn off the flame. Palak Paneer is ready!

The ingredients for Palak Paneer serves 2-3 persons with moderate appetite. :D

Aloo Paratha:

Ingredients:

– 3 Potatoes

– Atta and water

– Coriander leaves

– Graram masala, salt, and red chilly powder

Method of preparation:

Mix atta with water in proper proportions to form a consistent dough, and let it so for 15-20min. Meanwhile, chop the washed potatoes into big sized blocks (helps in cooking faster). Cook them in a pressure cooker for three whistles (it took about 15-20min for this). Take them out, and mash them by hand. Along with it, add a pinch of garam masala powder, salt and chilly powder. Also add finely chopped coriander leaves. Mix all of them well. You can also add finely chopped green chillies. I avoided it.

Now, roll a slice of dough to a thin circular shape. Make two of these, and oil it. Then, spread the mashed aloo on one of the unbaked bread/dough. Put another rolled dough slice over this, and roll it again. Bake it on a hot pan flipping it on either sides. Put a little butter over it, and Aloo paratha is ready!

The ingredients for Aloo paratha serves 1 person.

Time of preparation: Palak paneer and aloo paratha, together, 60-70 minutes.

Difficulty level: Moderate to difficult.

P.S.: My mom was directing me through out. She rolled the parathas for me, when i was getting restless and screwing it up.

P.P.S: How about i tagging a few fellow bloggers to cook their favorite food? *wicked smile*

Bon appetite guys!

T-a-a-a-g-g-g-e-e-d

My first ever ‘personal’ tag from Po.

1. If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be?

If she does then she’s someone else’s lover, not mine. :D

2. If you can have a dream to come true, what would it be?

My dreams usually are small ones, leading up to a big one. So, i’d want all those small ones to come true.

3. Whose butt would you like to kick?

If i felt so anytime, i’d not be waiting till i get to answer this question.

4. What would you do with a billion dollars?

I hope you aren’t referring to Zimbabwean dollars. I’d do some charity, all of it if Zimbabwean dollars, and some of it if not.

5. Will you fall in love with your best friend?

No. It’s just not possible.

6. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?

Being loved by the one you love. Does that ever happen?

7. How long do you intend to wait for someone you really love?

Till i love someone else. Now, come on you got to move on, don’t you? :)

8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?

Kill the other person. :P

Changed question. Answer is here:

My thoughts, over the years as i grew up, when i like someone:

– 15-17yrs : It’s just an infatuation, it’s better not to get involved.

– 17-21yrs : Oh.. she has a boyfriend, you don’t like her enough to mess with him.

– beyond 22 : Oops.. She’s engaged. OMG!! She’s married.. but she’s so young and pretty :-( :-(

– Future : She’s divorced.. So what, she’s pretty :P :))

9. If you like to act with someone, who will it be? Your gf/bf or an actress/actor?

Scarlett Johanson, Drew Barrymore and Sonali Bendre. :D

10. What takes you down the fastest?

Negative thoughts.

11. How would you see yourself in ten years time?

I don’t think technology would change enough to make me see myself in anything other than a mirror. :D :D

12. What’s your fear?

Writing more personal tags here. :D

13. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?

Enigmatic.

14. Would you rather be single and rich or married but poor?

Single and Rich. Flirting doesn’t count right? – I don’t want to change this answer, this is bang on in the line of my thoughts.

15. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

I’d have done a lot of things before i actually wake up.

16. Would you give all in a relationship?

Can’t say, it’s up to the person who takes.

17. If you fall in love with two people simultaneously, who would you pick?

The one who loves me more, if at all. :D

18. Would you forgive and forget no matter how horrible a thing that special someone has done?

How horrible can a thing be, like kill me? If i can become a ghost, then i’d sure wanna have my vengeance.

19. Do you prefer being single or having a relationship?

Non-committed relationship with a sensible girl. Oh come on, i’m not old enough for a committed relationship. ;)

List 6 people to tag: Reema (would she do it earlier than anyone else here?), Meghana (will this at least get her back to blogging?), Tia (you wanna do this?), Deepu (will she come up with a unique way of answering these?), Swats (Page3 style?), and Sakhi (story writing style tagging?).

P.S.: I hate personal tags, so if any of you wanna give a skip, they can.

My first post on this blog, Hey World, was on 4th September 2007. Today is 366th day since, and my stats at this moment shows 35524 hits. As any other amateur blogger i didn’t start this for hits, and as an indicative of that, first month of my blogging had only 118 hits. There are no real life friends of mine constantly following this blog even now. I didn’t advertise with my friends, i didn’t want an audience. I wanted a distraction, and blogging was one of those. I never imagined to blog for this long. Though i felt like stopping some time back, i didn’t.

I now read and follow a few blogs, listed in my blogroll, and i’d wanna mention them here. KJ Avinash, Meghana, Priya, Nikhil, Neha, RJ, Reema, Super Nova aka Neha, Sakhi, Bhavna, Radhesh, and Megha. This is in no particular order. There are few blogs which i wish to read or follow more often, but due to not-so-obvious reasons i don’t, rather i can’t. The list of blogs i’d like to read more often: Deepu, Manasa, Shefaly, Xylene, Vishesh, Amit, Dinesh, Swats, Tia, Sneha, Po, Su, Prarthana, and Priti. (i’d add more if i’ve missed any). I’ll try and follow these blogs more regularly from now on and will add them to my blogroll soon.

One year down, i have quite a few people following this blog, including Google, and this, at times, makes me conscious and reflects on my writing. Still, there is no fabrication. This has been a great beginning, and i hope to continue for a long time.

P.S.: Google Chrome will stalk you, beware.

How many movie reviews have i read in others’ blogs? by Nova – the marathon movie watcher, Meghana – a very close competitor, and Reema – another close competitor.  Seems like a zillion. My comment would generally be ‘Oh ya.. got to watch that one. Adding to my must watch list‘, ‘I’d wanna skip that‘, and ‘This is all i’d catch of this movie‘. One of my testimonial on a popular social networking site says ‘Doesnt watch too many movies : minus‘ in an analysis to make bachelor girls’ life easier. :))

I’ve skipped movies when my friends have bought tickets for me standing in long queues, forcing them to sell it. I’m sorry for that guys. Being in a big city with so many multiplexes, i had not been to one until last year. The expression of my friends would be something like ‘What!!?? You have never been to PVR!?‘ like i’ve missed the most important thing in life.

But i do watch movies, you’d be surprised to know i’ve watched Dil Chahta hai first day, first show, and since i’ve developed a liking for Farhan Akthar movies.

I’ll be watching ‘Rock On’ starring Farhan Akthar, SRK’s keep, Luke Kenny and Purab Kohil tonight. Watch out for my first movie review here (only if it turns out to be good :)).

Till then, laugh your heart out at this pic of Micheal Phelps at very young age:

Canon EOS 450D aka Rebel XSi or Kiss X2

Canon EOS 450D aka Rebel XSi or Kiss X2

Finally… Ya, Finally i’ve got my first DSLR, and it also happens to be my first digital camera.

I was about 4 years old when i got my first camera, it was a point and shoot 35mm film roll camera. I was super excited about getting that camera back then as i had got it after a long wait.

Using the lenses was exciting for me whenever i laid my hands on an old Nikon SLR film camera. I was never very fascinated to buy a mediocre digital camera, and was willing to wait until i make enough money to buy a DSLR.

Last year i started contemplating about buying my first DSLR. First it was the dilemma between Nikon and Canon. Then the model, lenses and finally the most important factor, money.

I was not very keen on getting DSLR without ‘live view’ function, neither was i willing to shell out lot of money. There were only two models with this feature when i started looking for DSLR. You can read about this in my Spid post. Then EOS 40D arrived, and i started to ping my friends in US. I was sure to get electronics at a cheaper price in US than in India since i got my QC3 from there. Just then, i heard about the to-be-launched Canon EOS 450D. I so wanted get this camera since i saw the specs. This was just perfect for me, neither in too professional range nor in the rookie range. My cousin flew back from San Diego in March and the camera was to be launched in April end. :(

I went through all the reviews, specifications, user feedbacks, and constantly changing prices in Amazon. Soon discovered that US1Photo gives the cheapest price for cameras. I almost got it last month from a colleague when he tripped to US, but he couldn’t get the cheapest deal available online. So i was all sad again. RJ then offered me to buy it from US1Photo and ship it all the way to India but that option also went void when i learned that i can’t avoid customs for shipped items, and was super frustrated.

Then, i realized it was not worth waiting any longer, and decided to buy it locally. Pixetra on Cunningham road offered me a very good deal for EOS 450D kit (comes with 18-55mm IS lens) with 2GB card, carry case and a 55-250mm IS lens. The offer came after a very good negotiation from my side. Jayesh Mehta of Foto Circle in the narrowest lanes of Bangalore at Balepet couldn’t match the offer given at Pixetra on Cunningham road.

So, today i finally got my first DSLR!

New category photography on my blog comes with this post.

Current Mood: Super Excited! :-)

Roland Garros, 2008

After watching a frustrating French open final i am not in mood to do anything. This is my way to vent the frustration. World number 1 in tennis losing in straight sets, scoring only 4 points in 3 sets, can’t annoy a tennis fan more. Was Federer outplayed by Nadal?

Of course not. One of the worst games Federer has played in years got Nadal his 4th title at Roland Garros. Roland Garros happens to be a French aviator, a trivia i was pleased to know than watch the abysmal performance by one of the greatest players in the history of tennis. Coming from a good match against the frenchman Gael Monfils, least i was expecting from Federer was give a stiff competition to the clay court champ. I knew it was too much to expect Federer to trash Nadal on clay. I was hoping to see a competitive match stretching to 4 sets, or at least a tie-breaker! All in vain.

I would be happy if Federer lost to unstoppable Nadal, but not when he lost to unforced errors. 35 unforced errors, crashing an aggressive forehand to the net or hitting it meters out of the box, like a rookie. Federer’s game annoyed me as much as the praise for Nadal by the commentators. Those morons were talking about how Nadal has ‘dominated’ the match. I could only see a few good passing shots by Nadal when Fed half-heartedly came to the net, and there was no signs of domination as Federer was literally throwing away the match with his unforced errors and poor conversion of 2nd serve to winning points. The commentators also started talking how amazing Nadal would be even on grass as he displayed supposedly some outstanding stuff last year in Wimbledon. I hope he gets trashed somewhere in 1st or 2nd round this year.

At one point in the 3rd set, i got so annoyed that i even started watching some crap talk by the Bachans and Ram Gopal Verma on a news channel! An average game by Nadal was enough to beat the off shine, under confident underdog Roger Federer. The only thing that made me smile this evening was the fast recap of this year’s tournament in the end, which showed the gorgeous Maria Sharapova for a moment. :)

Roger Federer

Having seen the genius of Roger Federer trashing best of the players like Safin and Roddick, it is disheartening to see him underperform and perish. Watching the King of tennis, who as i have seen shoot a winner even when on a wrong foot, to lose to an average game displayed by Nadal was sheer disappointment.

Federer needs to believe in himself and his abilities. He has to believe than he can beat, if not easily, Nadal on clay. He is world no. 1 for over four consecutive years for a reason, and that is because he is superior to the world no. 2, Rafael Nadal. I hope to see the genius display his abilities in full extravagance at the mecca of tennis, Wimbledon, which i truly believe is ‘The Grand Slam’. Watch out for Maria and FedEx sizzling on grass. :)

One of those days when your loved one leaves you. She slipped into the Goan waters on the beach of Vagator on a bright sunny day. I couldn’t see the brightness on the face as i picked her up from the water. The bright light had vanished. I patted her on the back a couple of times hoping to get that bright light flashing again, but in vain. I thought ‘She’ll be okay. Just a little water has entered, and she’ll be fine if dried in the sun for some time.’ I thought i’ll resurrect her. I was confident of this.

I returned to Bangalore with her, and tried to resurrect her. A day after we returned from Goa, she responded well. The bright white light was back, but flickered a little. I was sure she’ll recover soon. But, i was proved wrong. I realized the water had entered little too much for her comfort and had shorted the motherboard. My cellphone was dead!

I found it funny and weird when people had their cellphone in the list of things they can’t live without. I always felt i could manage without the agony of missing a cellphone since i bought my first phone about 6 years back when it was a fancy, and something i wished to have. Even then, neither was i addicted to my cellphone nor was i totally detached. Cellphones, the very gadget which was an expensive toy of the rich and show-offs soon became a ‘necessity’. Oh, you ought to have a cellphone. How can you live without that!?

I wanted to live without a cellphone, just for kicks, but didn’t get the chance until my working cellphone got conked. And the substitute cellphone had to be given back. I did live without a cellphone for a little more than 3 weeks beyond which i couldn’t as i succumbed to the pressure from my mom, and the one who threatened to work in a cafe to buy me a phone. :)

The three weeks don’t make a huge difference when you have your landline at home and desk phone at work. Unfortunately, the desk phone at work stopped working around the same time. In these three weeks, i managed to go for a treat with few friends at a distance more than 10kms from my home. I also managed to go, with few colleagues at work, to Nandi hills to watch sunrise atop the hills. Leaving home at 4 am on a Sunday morning and without cellphone to contact people was not much of problem. I also did most of my routine work. It worked out fine. I missed my desk phone more, as i had to walk more to talk to team mates about work, than cellphone.

Samsung C160

Finally i bought a very low-end, minimal featured handset Samsung C160. I simply didn’t like any of the phones in the market. Either they are bulky or they don’t have any significant improvements other than the higher megapixel or more flash memory. The exception being GPS, which has caught my eye for now. This too is very primitive, and didn’t excite me enough to buy a set with this.

Anyway, with this experience i realized i can live a non-materialistic life. Things i haven’t tried living without are quite a few. On top of the list is a vehicle, the maximum i have lived without that is about 2 weeks way back in 2002. Next is a computer without net connection, the maximum without this being one week. I know i can live without these things more than the achieved maximum, but haven’t got such an ‘opportunity’ yet. Now, temme what are the things you can live without?

Rest in peace, My Nokia 7610.
